WIMS - WIMS

Course Description:

NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN S-491 COURSE

Individual lessons include discussing the relationship between WIMS and NFDRS, maneuvering through the WIMS program, maintaining station catalogs, managing the "MODEL", and techniques to ensure data quality control and troubleshoot outputs. Student exercises are interspersed with various lessons. There will be time dedicated to looking at local station catalogs, input parameters and outputs to ensure they are as accurate as possible.

Objectives:

At the end of this session, students will be able to display the NFDRS outputs of their individual weather stations and determine if they are correct or not.  If not, they will be able to make the necessary corrections.

Target Group:

Dispatchers who have the need to use WIMS on their local unit as well as managers who may supervise such individuals. In addition, anyone who may have a need to view weather and fire danger information using WIMS would benefit from this class.

Prerequisites:

Read "Gaining an Understanding of the National Fire Danger Rating System" which is available through PMS as PMS 932 (NFES 2665). Students must have a valid WIMS Log-on ID and current password in order to successfully complete the class exercises. A Log-on ID can be obtained by going to http://fam.nwcg.gov/fam-web/ and clicking on New User Accounts and then follow the directions for obtaining a new account.
